9am-1pm Hosted by Elizabethtown College Culture, Caring, and Connecting: Empathy-Building through Storytelling and Global Exploration Sarah Watts, Presenter Session Description: This participatory workshop invites teachers to explore issues related to empathy-building, care theory, bibliotherapy, and intercultural understandings through stories, movement, singing, instrument play, creativity, and world music explorations as applied to the general music setting. Sarah Watts joined the Penn State School of Music faculty in 2015 as an assistant professor. She is a specialist in early childhood and elementary music education, with a particular interest in Orff Schulwerk pedagogy. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from Penn State, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Dr. Watts taught for several years in early childhood and elementary general music settings, and she has held collegiate appointments at Bucknell University, Cleveland State University, and Kent State University. Her teaching and scholarly interests include world music pedagogy, issues of care and empathy in music education, musical oral history, social and emotional learning, and applications of children’s literature in music education settings. Her publications can be found in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Journal of General Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, The Orff Echo, and Music Educators Journal. She is additionally the author of Volume I: Early Childhood Education of the Routledge World Music Pedagogy Series and co-author of Voice Collectors: Stories and Songs of Chinese Culture Bearers with Le Zhang. |
